Our Projects!

Community Environmental Profiling

Currently LSCAP is in the process of developing a community environmental profile of the area from Cartwright - Lodge bay.  In doing this we are recording information on the locations of: businesses, sewage outfalls, dumps, major woodcutting operations, etc.

The information gathered from this work will be used over the next 3 - 4 years to develop a Comprehensive Environmental Management Plan (CEMP) of the project area.  This plan will look at the most pressing environmental problems in our region and will outline the most effective ways of dealing with those problems so that people can enjoy a sustained or enhanced quality of life in our area.

Gilbert Bay Marine Protected Area Coordination Services

In collaboration with Fisheries and Oceans Canada (DFO), in June of 2007 LSCAP entered into a contract to provide coordination services for the Gilbert Bay Marine Protected Area.

To facilitate this work, LSCAP hired a part-time coordinator, Marilyn Penney, from Port Hope Simpson.  Marilyn will be helping DFO and the Gilbert Bay Steering Committee (GBSC) over the next while with such task as: project administration, public relations, fieldwork, etc.

Summer projects

This summer we participated in two summer projects within our area. One was hosted by the Conservation corps in the form of a Green Team in Cartwright. The second project was stationed in Black Tickle and was made possible by a grant supplied by the provincial government. Both teams did a beach cleanup/biodiversity survey in their communities. To view a sample of what was encountered during each project, follow the links in the right panel.
