Employees! Rex Turnbull - Executive Director Rex was born and raised in Port Hope Simpson and graduated from the local high school in 1993. From 1994-1998 he attended school at Grenfell college, Labrador College and Westviking College. During the period of 1998-2002 he worked in a crab plant in Cartwright during the summer and operated the local CAP site in Port Hope Simpson during the winter. From 2002-2004 he worked with SmartLabrador as a fieldworker. In 2004 Rex returned to school to complete a Computer Support Specialist program with the College of the North Atlantic. Rex has been active in Zone 4 as a trainer, technician, and a volunteer for various groups and organizations for over 10 years. He has worked with the schools, clinics, local businesses, etc. Due to his work experience, Rex is a well known figure in the area As Executive Director of LSCAP, Rex is responsible for the day-to-day operation of the organization and for ensuring that the recommendations of LSCAP’s Board of Directors are carried out in order to ensure the objectives of the organization are met. Marilyn Parr - Penney - Gilbert Bay MPA Community Coordinator Marilyn grew up in Port Hope Simpson, Labrador, spending summers in Sandy Hook as a participant in the summer cod fishery. Marilyn has been involved with numerous projects throughout LSCAP’s project area over the years, and has served in many different positions. Marilyn continues to be a member of the Learning Centre committee. She has also worked on an oral history project, during which time she created a book of stories collected from individuals in the community. The book was entitled: Let it be Said, Written and Read. She was also part of a team that did profiles of seniors in Economic Zone 4 and created a seniors book entitled: Our Time, Our Story. While working with the Literacy Council, Marilyn also collected information and assisted with creating two culturally relevant children's books: Let’s play the Labrador Way and ABC’s & 123’s. During her work as a Forestry Coordinator, Marilyn planned and organized a Pan Labrador Forestry Forum for Labrador. This forum brought together individuals involved in the forestry sector to discuss future plans for the forest industry. While working with Chamber of Commerce Marilyn planned and organized a Business Forum for Business owners in Economic Zone 4. She also planned and organized Calvary Pentecostal Tabernacle’s 70th Anniversary celebration, in 2006. Other work positions that Marilyn has held include: Program Director for Rainbow Family Centre; Network Director for Waste Management; Treasurer for Calvary Pentecostal Tabernacle; Surveyor with the Labrador White Bear Literacy Council, Labrador Community College, and Battle Harbour Literacy Council; Cook with Port Hope Simpson Lodging and B&B, Cartaway Resources, Labrador Exploration, Hewlett’s Group Limited, Midway Restaurant, Charlottetown Inn, and Bayview Snack Bar; Cashier/Waitress at Midway Restaurant, Charlottetown Inn, and Bayview Snack Bar; Cashier at Notley’s Store, and Russell’s P&L Incorporated; Janitor for D.C. Young Pentecostal School, and the Department of Forestry; and Homecare Worker with Grenfell Regional Health Services. Ms. Penney has also completed training in the following: · Laubach Tutor Training · Basic Bookkeeping · First Aid · Home Monitoring · Minute/Note Taking In her position as MPA Community Coordinator for the Gilbert Bay project, Marilyn’s duties include: acting as a liaison between the Gilbert Bay Steering committee and DFO, organizing committee meetings and keeping minutes, providing information to the public regarding the Gilbert Bay project though her collaboration on the Coastal Current, assisting with fieldwork, and researching sources of funding for the Gilbert Bay project. |
